AFC Updates: Tyreek Hill, Garrett Wilson, Dolphins, Jets, and Patriots
Dolphins
Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill expressed concerns about missing crucial practice reps with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
“I need those valuable reps with Tua,” Hill mentioned via PFT. “Those vet rest days are starting to show. I completely blame myself for not getting my head around and not seeing the ball because, if I see a ball, we’re talking cross-court, 70-yard touchdown. But those Wednesday reps are definitely showing. As a leader, I’ve just got to be able to bite the bullet sometimes and practice to get those valuable reps with QB1 because, if we’re able to stay on the field on third down, who knows what could happen.”
Jets
New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson expressed his desire to be more engaged in the team’s offensive game plan.
“I’d like to be involved; I’d love to make an impact on the game, but people see it differently,” Wilson stated via ESPN. “That’s out of my control.”
Wilson has previously shown appreciation for passing game coordinator Todd Downing, leaving it unclear who he feels limits his involvement in the play scheme.
“I believe I ran solid routes this game,” Wilson added. “I had opportunities to help the team, but sometimes things just don’t fall into place.”
He openly shared his frustrations with the current season’s progress.
“At the end of the day, this is my legacy, this is what I do,” Wilson remarked. “When they review the film, I want to leave a positive impression, showcasing my ability to run effective routes and find open spaces in the zone.”
- Jets interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich commented on Wilson: “At the end of the day, we must find ways to get Garrett the ball more often. He’s not just one of the best players on our team, but arguably one of the best players in the league at his position. Due to various reasons, including coverage, (Rodgers) hasn’t been able to get the ball to Garrett, but we absolutely need to find ways to involve him more.” (Rich Cimini)
- New York QB Aaron Rodgers is contemplating taking a pay cut or mentoring a rookie QB next year but remains uncertain about his playing intentions for the future. (Rich Cimini)
Patriots
New England showed improvement in Week 16 against the Bills after facing several challenging weeks. Patriots first-round QB Drake Maye defended his coaching staff amid ongoing criticism and praised their dedication and passion for the game.
“I think it’s some BS, to be quite honest,” Maye stated via Chris Mason of Mass Live. “Coach Mayo has our support. He pushes us hard because he wants to win, and we all share that desire. We’re all feeling frustrated. The AVP has been calling great plays recently; we’re just a few plays away. The turnovers are on me. I believe this reflects on our team’s fight and tenacity.”
“Even if we’re out of playoff contention, we’re still frustrated when we don’t score. The energy at practice and during games is contagious; we want to win. Even players on the sidelines who aren’t playing are cheering for our success. I genuinely believe we’re building something good here, and I’m proud to be a member of the Patriots.”
