Buccaneers Announce Seven Roster Changes, Re-Sign OLB Shaquil Barrett

The Buccaneers announced several significant roster moves on Saturday, highlighted by the re-signing of outside linebacker Shaquil Barrett.

The Buccaneers also made several other roster adjustments during this announcement.

This update follows Barrett’s request for reinstatement from retirement last week. Unfortunately, the Dolphins opted not to activate him from the retired list and subsequently waived him on Wednesday.

Barrett had previously stepped away from football in July to focus on family after signing a one-year deal with the Dolphins. His family faced an unimaginable tragedy when they lost their young daughter in a drowning accident last year.

At 31 years old, Barrett began his NFL career in 2014 as an undrafted free agent with the Broncos after playing at Colorado State. Initially waived post-preseason, he rejoined Denver’s practice squad.

Barrett eventually made the active roster at the end of his rookie season and fulfilled the remaining term of his rookie contract.

In 2019, Barrett signed with the Buccaneers on a one-year deal worth $4 million, later receiving the franchise tag in 2020. He secured a four-year extension worth $68 million in 2021 but was released earlier this offseason.

He then joined the Dolphins on a one-year contract worth up to $9 million but chose to retire in July.

During the 2023 season, Barrett appeared in 16 games with the Buccaneers, amassing 52 tackles, three tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, one interception returned for a touchdown, and two pass deflections.
