Chiefs’ Starting Quarterback Carson Wentz for Week 18

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has announced that the team will start QB Carson Wentz in Week 18, as reported by Matt Derrick.

The Chiefs have already clinched a first-round bye and have nothing to gain in the regular season. This situation allows them to rest key starters for a substantial three weeks ahead of the postseason.

In addition, Reid confirmed that WR Mecole Hardman has been designated to return from injured reserve.

Carson Wentz, 32, was a first-round pick by the Eagles in 2016. He began his career under a four-year, $26.7 million rookie deal that included a signing bonus of $16.7 million. The Eagles exercised his fifth-year option, which would have required them to pay him $22.78 million for the 2020 season. They later signed Wentz to a hefty four-year, $128 million extension in 2019, with $107 million guaranteed before trading him to the Colts for first- and third-round picks.

Wentz’s time with the Colts was short-lived, as he was traded to the Commanders after just one season. Washington subsequently released him, and he later joined the Rams as a backup.

The Chiefs signed Wentz to a one-year contract ahead of the 2024 season. Throughout the 2023 campaign, Wentz saw action in two games for the Rams, starting once. He completed 17 of 24 passes, achieving a completion rate of 70.3%, for a total of 163 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception. Additionally, he rushed for 56 yards on 17 carries, scoring another touchdown.
