Jets

Jets CB D.J. Reed shared with reporters his intention to explore free agency this offseason, as the New York team had a chance to extend his contract but chose not to.

“I definitely want to go into free agency, and it’s not because I don’t want to be a New York Jet,” Reed stated to ESPN’s Rich Cimini. “I genuinely want to be a New York Jet, but I feel like they had the whole offseason and even the entire season to extend it, and they didn’t. For me personally, it would be best to enter free agency and see what options are available.”

  • Jets QB Aaron Rodgers made history on Sunday by becoming the most sacked quarterback in NFL history, with a total of 566 sacks throughout his career (Rich Cimini).

Patriots

Patriots HC Jerod Mayo acknowledged that fans expressed their frustrations by calling for his termination following a significant loss to the Chargers last Saturday.

“You hear those things, but at the same time, they’ve paid to be here, and we need to perform better,” Mayo remarked regarding the chants, as reported by Mike Reiss of ESPN. “If we play better, we won’t have to listen to that.”

Veteran defensive linemen Deatrich Wise Jr. and Davon Godchaux quickly came to Mayo’s defense during their interviews about the fan reactions.

“I believe he’s doing a fantastic job in keeping us motivated and focused on our goals each week,” Wise Jr. stated. “It’s ultimately up to the players. Coaches coach; players play. From my perspective, I think there were many games where I could have performed better to contribute to our success. Mayo puts the team in good positions, provides positive feedback, yet also critiques in a constructive manner. I don’t think we should write him off now. Many coaches start off struggling, but a number of them end up thriving and making the playoffs.”

“He’s in his first season; we didn’t expect to win a Super Bowl this year. Yes, being beaten 40-7 is tough, but the chants are absurd,” Godchaux added. “Everyone is accountable, including players, coaches, and the front office. We need to improve as an entire organization. I believe in this team. Just last week, we put one of the best teams in the NFL [Buffalo] under pressure. This negativity is unwarranted. He’s in his first year; it’s ridiculous.”

  • Mayo on possibly coaching for his job: “I’m always under pressure; that’s nothing new for me.” (Chad Graff)
  • Mayo stated that the decision to start Rhamondre Stevenson at running back was made by the coach, despite his earlier comments about Antonio Gibson being the starter (Doug Kyed).
  • Patriots QB Drake Maye commented on taking a hit to the head on Saturday: “I feel good — I’m all set — and I was ready to go… The guys up front are working hard, so I’m not the type to say, ‘Hey, take me out.’ That’s just not me.” (Mike Reiss)
  • Patriots C Cole Strange discussed his debut at center: “I believe I didn’t have any severe snap issues; I had one error early in the third quarter, but that’s something I can fix. Most of my mistakes were more mental than technical, but those are easy fixes, and I’m confident I’m improving.” (Reiss)
  • According to Adam Schefter, the Patriots could secure the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft with a loss next week against the Bills.
