AFC Updates: Jerod Mayo, Patriots, and Dolphins Insights
Dolphins
- Dolphins S Jevon Holland faced a fine of $11,817 for unnecessary roughness (low block) during Week 16.
Patriots
Chad Graff of The Athletic analyzed the New England Patriots’ offseason requirements for free agency and proposed potential solutions.
- Graff emphasizes that the priority at wide receiver seems to be “almost feels like [Tee] Higgins or bust”, despite the understanding that they may need to overpay to secure his signature.
- If pursuing Higgins isn’t feasible, Graff suggests alternatives including Buccaneers WR Chris Godwin, Bills WR Amari Cooper, Texans WR Stefon Diggs, and Chiefs WR DeAndre Hopkins. Godwin is mentioned as the top option due to his age.
- The offensive line is highlighted as another critical focus, with Vikings OT Cam Robinson and Ravens OT Ronnie Stanley identified as the prime tackle choices in free agency.
- On the interior line, Graff shows interest in Eagles G Mekhi Becton for his versatility and also points to Chiefs G Trey Smith, Bears G Teven Jenkins, and Colts G Will Fries as possible candidates.
- Despite the strong performance of CB Christian Gonzalez, there may be a need for an outside corner if CB Jonathan Jones departs. Options include San Francisco CB Charvarius Ward, Lions CB Carlton Davis, and Vikings CB Byron Murphy Jr., all of whom could fit well in various roles.
- Lastly, Graff believes the Patriots may need additional help with pass rushing, considering players like Chargers OLB Khalil Mack or Jets DE Haason Reddick as younger options.
Patriots Thoughts
Patriots DE Keion White made headlines with his remarks regarding the franchise’s struggles under HC Jerod Mayo this season, a sentiment he reiterated after the team’s loss to the Chargers.
“You wrote exactly what I said,” White expressed to Karen Guregian. “I stand by everything I said. If people choose to read the whole article or just read the headline, I really don’t care how anybody took it. As long as we’re good on the inside, and me and Mayo have an understanding, I still rock by him, and I’m still with him. And me and him know what it is and what it ain’t. People on the outside can take it any way they want to take it. It don’t matter to me.”
“I stand by that. If you’re not producing in the NFL, you should get out,” White added. “If you’re not useful, not get out, but things should be changed. That’s anybody. It’s a production-based business. Whatever you’ve got to do in everything, me included, that’s what you’ve got to do. I don’t hold any ill will towards anybody. I know it’s a ‘what have you done for me lately’ league, and I accept that. It is what it is. I acknowledge I’m not doing well at run defense. We’re not getting pressure on the quarterback right now. That’s production. I think, still, something’s gotta change. We’re losing, so obviously, we’ve got to change something. If you keep doing the same thing, you keep losing. Like I said, if we keep doing the same thing … something’s gotta change.”
White emphasized that he is unconcerned about social media reactions and does not believe his statements have caused any division within the team.
