AFC Updates: Garrett Wilson, Mike Tomlin, Dolphins, Jets, and Steelers Highlights
Dolphins
- Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver noted that undrafted cornerback Storm Duck has “played himself” into a backup role, according to Barry Jackson.
- Regarding cornerback Cam Smith, Dolphins secondary coach Brian Duker emphasized the importance of getting into better shape: “The biggest thing I’ve talked to Cam about is we would like to see him put on the body armor to play a full shape. Needs to be in shape to do that. Your body has to be in shape to do that.” (Barry Jackson)
Jets
- Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson recently shared his uncertainties regarding his future in New York. In response to inquiries about increasing Wilson’s targets, passing game coordinator Todd Downing stated the need to better involve their playmakers: “When we only score nine points, we gotta look at ways to get our playmakers the ball more. I feel like it has been a balance that we’ve done a pretty decent job of throughout the course of the year and, obviously, we want to get our guys involved as much as we can.” (Rich Cimini)
- On the topic of WR Malachi Corley potentially getting more opportunities, Downing mentioned the focus on winning games while Corley is “learning” to accept his role: “First of all, our priority is winning games, not evaluation. He certainly has gone through the season of wanting more opportunities, but I think he’s learning to handle that in better and more mature ways.”
Steelers
Dolphins head coach Mike Tomlin reflected on their 29-10 loss to the Chiefs on Christmas, calling it “eerily similar” to their Week 16 defeat against the Ravens.
“You know, that sucked, to be blunt,” Tomlin stated, as reported by Bob Labriola of the team’s site. “Not the type of ball we want to play, and really kind of eerily similar to our last performance in that we’re not doing the fundamental things well enough. We’re turning the ball over. We’re not getting turnovers. That hasn’t been a recipe for us, but it has been of late.”
Tomlin expressed that the team is performing at a “junior varsity” level and needs to reevaluate their approach.
“So you can look at it from a lot of angles. The bottom line is junior varsity is not good enough,” Tomlin said. “We’ve got to own that. But we’ve also got to look at what it is we need to do differently. We’re not going to continue to do the same things and hope for a different result. That doesn’t seem sharp to me. So we’re going to take a hard look at this. We’ve got a couple extra days before we get back into it. We’re going to take a look at it and make whatever necessary changes we need to make in the totality of this thing, because again, that doesn’t feel good. It doesn’t look good. That’s just the truth and reality of it.”
