BREAKING: Texans Acquire WR Diontae Johnson
As reported by Adam Schefter, the Houston Texans have successfully claimed wide receiver Diontae Johnson off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens.
With Johnson’s arrival, the Texans are looking to mitigate the loss of wide receivers Stefon Diggs and Tank Dell, both of whom are recovering from knee injuries this season.
Johnson’s tenure with the Ravens ended after mutual agreement, as both parties opted to excuse him from team activities. This decision came after Johnson expressed frustration about his role, stemming from his trade from the Panthers.
Additionally, Johnson faced a one-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team due to refusing to enter a game.
Since his midseason trade to Baltimore from Carolina, Johnson had limited playing time, recording just a single reception, which contributed to his frustrations.
At 28 years old, Johnson was drafted in the third round (66th overall) by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2019. His initial contract was a four-year deal worth $4,251,708, including a $1,129,110 signing bonus.
Before entering the 2022 season, Johnson signed a two-year contract extension for $36 million, making him an unrestricted free agent in 2023. He was later traded to Carolina for cornerback Donte Jackson and a pick swap prior to the 2024 season.
Following this, Carolina traded Johnson to the Ravens midseason in exchange for another pick swap.
So far in 2024, Johnson has played in 11 games, tallying 31 receptions on 63 targets for 363 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
