AFC Insights: Anthony Richardson, Colts, Texans, and Titans

Colts

The Colts’ quarterback, Anthony Richardson, was sidelined during the team’s Week 17 defeat, which ended their chances of reaching the postseason, due to significant back spasms. Indianapolis head coach Shane Steichen disclosed the gravity of Richardson’s back injury, emphasizing that they wanted to avoid any risk of further harm.

“Yeah, it was back spasms, and it was bad,” Steichen remarked via Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. “He wasn’t able to go; otherwise, he would have played. We didn’t want to put him in harm’s way.”

Steichen also explained the lack of transparency regarding Richardson’s injury from the onset.

“I prefer to keep a lot of things in-house, you know what I mean? That’s just how I operate.”

  • Last week, Richardson expressed that he could barely walk, and an MRI indicated an injury to one of his discs, according to Joel Erickson.

Texans

In other news, Texans wide receiver Diontae Johnson is eager for a fresh beginning in Houston following his release from the Baltimore Ravens.

“I’m leaving that in the past. It’s a fresh start here,” Johnson stated, as reported by ESPN. “I had a good time there, and I built great relationships. Those connections will endure. My focus is on winning games and making a deep playoff run.”

Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans is optimistic about Johnson’s potential contributions, despite his turbulent previous season.

“With Diontae joining our team, we’re getting a talented player who has performed well at a high level,” Ryans commented. “What happened in the past doesn’t matter; this is a new chapter for him and for us. It’ll be exciting to see how he enhances our performance, both on and off the field.”

Johnson acknowledged the positive culture that Ryans has established.

“Team first,” Johnson emphasized. “Everyone is focused on the team, and I am too. I’ll do whatever the coach asks of me.”

  • He also mentioned his commitment to building relationships in Houston: “I’m focused on developing connections, communicating, and showing that I want to be a vital part of both the offense and this organization.” (Aaron Wilson)

Titans

Titans quarterback Will Levis is optimistic about the opportunity to play in Week 18, viewing it as a crucial chance to secure his place within the team’s future plans after a challenging year.

“This is the last opportunity of the year to play some football, and I’m eager to head out there and chase another win,” Levis said via Jim Wyatt on the team’s official site. “I wouldn’t want my last throw of the season to be a pick-6. So, at least I have a chance to avoid that situation. My goal is to play quarterback to the best of my ability and finish the season on a high note.”

Titans head coach Brian Callahan mentioned that the current strategy involves both Levis and veteran quarterback Mason Rudolph participating, though he has not yet clarified how the playing time will be distributed.

“I have a good sense of how it will play out,” Callahan stated. “I’ll inform you all at the end of the week after we complete practice. Right now, they’re sharing reps evenly, ensuring both are ready for action.”
