AFC Updates: Brock Bowers, Patrick Mahomes, Chargers, Chiefs, and Raiders Insights

Chargers

The Chargers faced a challenging situation in Week 16, trailing two scores against the Broncos after a loss to the Buccaneers in the previous game. However, they managed to rally in the second half, securing a crucial win. Los Angeles DL Morgan Fox shared the team’s mindset when they found themselves down by double digits.

“We looked in the mirror and were just sick of it — sick of our performance in the first half and sick of how we played against the Bucs,” Fox stated. “Everyone came together and said, ‘We’re not going to let this happen anymore.’ And that’s exactly what we did.”

According to Chargers DC Jesse Minter, the team’s ability to respond speaks volumes about their resilience.

“You hope you’ve built a strong enough foundation,” Minter commented. “That you can look at each other, address your problems, and trust one another.”

Chiefs

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes delivered another impressive performance in Week 16, even while battling through an injury that would have sidelined many players. Kansas City HC Andy Reid emphasized the significance of having a leader as mentally and physically tough as Mahomes.

“He sets a high standard for us because he’s incredibly tough in every aspect,” Reid noted, as reported by Nate Taylor of The Athletic. “Most guys wouldn’t come back like he did, but he committed himself to it and spent ample time in the training room. It sends a strong message to the entire team, and our leaders lead by example. They strive to play through adversity.”

  • The Chiefs conducted workouts with TEs Cameron Latu and Robert Tonyan this week, according to Howard Balzer.
  • Kansas City signed Tonyan to their practice squad.

Raiders

Raiders first-round TE Brock Bowers continued to impress in his rookie season, surpassing the 100-catch and 1,000-yard milestones during their Week 16 victory. Las Vegas QB Aidan O’Connell praised Bowers for managing all responsibilities placed upon him.

“We ask a lot from him, and he consistently rises to the occasion,” O’Connell said, as reported by ESPN’s Paul Gutierrez. “We’re incredibly fortunate to have him on our team.”

Raiders HC Antonio Pierce praised Bowers for his well-rounded skill set and work ethic.

“I’ve always said it from the start — he’s all about football,” Pierce stated. “He’s focused and determined. He wants to win and will do whatever it takes, whether it’s catching the ball or blocking. I’m proud of his commitment and performance.”
