NFC Roundup: Michael Penix Jr., Derek Carr, Falcons, Panthers, and Saints

Falcons

The Falcons’ first-round quarterback, Michael Penix Jr., expressed that he feels a mix of excitement and nerves as he prepares for his inaugural start with the team this Sunday.

I just got to be myself,” Penix stated, according to PFT. “I don’t need to be someone I’m not. I don’t have to overexert myself to be the vocal leader. Just trust my preparation and bring the team along with me.

Former starting QB Kirk Cousins, who was benched after a series of poor performances, assured that he would support Penix in every possible way.

I just let him know I’m in his corner, supporting him and helping out however I can,” Cousins commented. “Even when I’m the starter, we work together as a team, and that doesn’t change now.

Panthers

Linebacker Jon Rhattigan of the Panthers has made a name for himself as a standout on special teams. Carolina cornerback Michael Jackson acknowledged Rhattigan’s dedication and ability to make significant contributions.

He’s a solid player. Works hard,” Jackson said, referencing Joseph Person of The Athletic. “Finally getting his chance to showcase his skills on defense changes the perception of him. People often only see him as a special teams player. This is his moment to prove he can excel on defense as well.”

Throughout his career, Rhattigan has had limited opportunities on defense, with only 20 defensive snaps, 11 of which occurred during the Seahawks’ substantial loss to the Ravens last season. The linebacker reflected on that experience, where he managed to record five tackles.

The highlight was just getting comfortable and letting the game flow. At the end of the day, it’s just football,” Rhattigan stated. “It’s all about having the right mindset and getting to the ball. I made several tackles, which felt good.”

Jackson added that Rhattigan consistently shows up ready to work. “He’s quiet, but he gets the job done, is always punctual, and knows where he needs to be,” Jackson said. “I trust he’ll perform well.”

Saints

  • Saints GM Mickey Loomis indicated that QB Derek Carr must improve his hand function before returning. “We’ll proceed until he can play effectively. He’s eager to get back when he’s ready,” he stated (Jeff Nowak).
  • In a recent interview, New Orleans RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire shared his excitement about the chance to return home and don the Saints uniform. (Jeff Nowak)
  • Nick Underhill reported that Saints WR Chris Olave (concussion) was cleared by a specialist this week and participated in Thursday’s practice.
  • Underhill noted that they will evaluate Olave’s condition and “proceed from there.”
  • Reports suggest that the groin injury of Saints RB Alvin Kamara may be severe enough to end his season. Underhill emphasized that Kamara is unlikely to return for Week 16.
  • Underhill also noted that Kamara “intends” to make a comeback before the season concludes.
  • Saints interim head coach Darren Rizzi denied claims that Derek Carr is facing a season-ending injury, indicating that Carr would be on injured reserve if that were the case, as noted by Katherine Terrell.
  • Rizzi stated that Olave is “probably doubtful” for Week 16, calling it “a bit aggressive” for him to play, according to Matthew Paras.
