NFC Insights: Michael Penix Jr., Bryce Young, Falcons, Panthers, and Saints
“It definitely lifts me up, and I believe it does the same for the rest of the guys,” stated Panthers RG Robert Hunt in a recent interview on the team’s website. “I noticed that hit and rushed over to him. I was like, ‘Yo, s—, are you all right?’ After checking on him, he popped right back up with a smile, ready to play. That kid is tough as nails, and I have to give him a lot of credit.”
Panthers HC Dave Canales commented on the progress of Young, noting that he has become more decisive and accurate since his time on the bench.
“Yeah, he just played fast again,” Canales said, summarizing Young’s development. “He was really decisive. In the first half, you saw him scramble and pick up critical third downs, even running one in for a touchdown. It’s all about being decisive, knowing where the opportunities lie in his concepts, and making those critical plays when the windows opened. Plus, he made some really nice throws when we needed him to.”
Saints
Saints interim HC Darren Rizzi is emerging as a solid candidate for the team’s permanent head coaching position. He previously interviewed with the Dolphins in 2019 before they decided to go with former HC Brian Flores, where Rizzi was reportedly a finalist.
“When I went into those interviews, I was determined to get the job,” Rizzi remarked, as reported by ESPN. “I felt both situations were serious, not just courtesy interviews. I received great feedback from both.”
Rizzi mentioned that he has been preparing for this opportunity his entire life, stepping in as the head coach after former Saints HC Dennis Allen left his position.
“It’s been my goal for my entire coaching career, which spans 32 years,” Rizzi shared. “I feel like the old guy now, but it would mean the world to me.”
Rizzi has prior head coaching experience from his time at New Haven.
“I was really unprepared for it. It was a baptism by fire,” Rizzi reflected. “Those three years as a head coach there taught me the most because I had to learn it all. I picked up insights about everything—offense, defense, special teams, and even off the field roles like the training room and equipment management. I really appreciated the various jobs since our staff was minimal during that time. Then I had to figure out game management—I had a lot to learn!”
