Deion Sanders has urged NFL teams to consider the exceptional versatility of reigning Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter. According to Sanders, teams should only draft Hunter if they are ready to utilize him as both a wide receiver and cornerback.
“Travis could definitely do that,” Sanders shared with Rich Eisen on Friday regarding Hunter’s capability to play multiple positions (see video at the 3:12 mark). “He should either play both ways or they shouldn’t draft him.”
“I’ll make sure of that. If you’re not prepared to let him shine on both sides, don’t draft him,” Sanders added.
Sanders elaborated: “He can certainly be used creatively. He doesn’t need to play every snap as we did, but if he starts at cornerback, he should also feature in your nickel or spread packages on offense.”
“If you leave your best receiver on the sideline while struggling to move the ball, or your top corner while the opposition is scoring at will, you’ll look foolish,” Sanders stated.
Hunter was awarded the Heisman Trophy for his outstanding performance in college football, logging an impressive 84 percent of Colorado’s snaps last season.
He logged 669 snaps on defense and 687 on offense, totaling over 400 snaps more than the next closest player in the FBS.
According to Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer, 12 out of 13 head coaches and general managers surveyed believe Hunter will primarily play defense, but will contribute offensively as well.
“Even if we start him as a cornerback, we’d create offensive packages for him,” Glazer noted.

@NFLonFOX, I polled 13 head coaches and GMs on where they’d play Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter.
12 said cornerback with offensive packages, while one said they’d try him at punt returner, citing his elite ball skills.
During his own impressive 14-season career in the NFL, Sanders was primarily a defensive back. His standout season came in 1996 while playing for the Dallas Cowboys, where he logged 33 tackles and 36 receptions.
It looks like Sanders is optimistic that Hunter can replicate his own success as a two-way player when he enters the NFL draft this April, where he is anticipated to be a top pick.
