The New York Jets have faced significant challenges this season, and reports suggest that the franchise’s struggles may extend beyond the current year.

A detailed report by Zack Rosenblatt, Dianna Russini, and Michael Silver from The Athletic revealed much of the organizational turmoil under team owner Woody Johnson, particularly during NFL draft days.

According to a former executive, Johnson tends to isolate himself during critical decision-making moments at the annual NFL Draft. After withdrawing, he often heads to a nearby snack bar with friends to make snarky remarks about the front office’s choices.

The report also recounted an instance where Johnson voiced strong disapproval regarding former general manager Mike Maccagnan’s decision to draft Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg in the second round back in 2016.

In hindsight, Johnson’s criticism may have been warranted, as Hackenberg never took the field for the Jets and fell significantly short of the expectations associated with his draft position.

Furthermore, The Athletic’s report shed light on incidents where Johnson’s family criticized players within the locker room, noting a pervasive lack of confidence in the ownership and their inner circle. The findings paint a concerning picture of the team’s work environment.

Since acquiring the Jets in 2000, Johnson’s tenure began on a promising note.

The team qualified for the playoffs six times between 2001 and 2010, emerging as a competitive force against the dominant New England Patriots in the AFC East. Sadly, the Jets have not made the playoffs since the 2010 season and have recorded the eighth-fewest wins (172) in the league during Johnson’s ownership.

The immediate outlook seems bleak, as the team currently stands at 4-10 and is led by a 41-year-old quarterback, compounded by vacancies for both head coach and general manager positions.

With the upcoming NFL draft poised to be pivotal for the team’s turnaround, this report suggests that Johnson is likely to vocalize his dissatisfaction if he feels the wrong players are selected.
