More than eight years later, Laremy Tunsil, the Houston Texans offensive tackle, reflects on his memorable experience during the chaotic night of the 2016 NFL Draft.

Originally projected as a top-10 pick, Tunsil fell to the Miami Dolphins at No. 13 after his Twitter account was hacked, leading to the release of a video showing him wearing a gas mask and smoking marijuana.

“I was panicking a little bit, and I just thought, ‘Don’t let my mom and my auntie see this,'” Tunsil told ESPN’s DJ Bien-Aime. “How can we clean this up quickly?”

Bien-Aime explained that the viral video notably affected Tunsil’s draft status.

A former staff member of the Baltimore Ravens indicated that the incident “definitely influenced the conversation” regarding their decision to pick Ronnie Stanley instead of Tunsil.

The San Francisco 49ers faced a similar situation, with one insider sharing that they hadn’t invested much time in scouting Tunsil, believing he would be off the board by their seventh pick.

“When the video surfaced and he was still available, we realized we didn’t know him well enough to go against [DeForest] Buckner’s nearly flawless history,” the source reported.

As the draft progressed, Tunsil began to feel anxious, eagerly waiting for the call every prospect dreams of receiving.

“Once I noticed that Baltimore and Tennessee, two teams I knew wanted me, passed over, it felt discouraging,” he recalled. “I genuinely thought I was sliding to the second or third round.”

Fortunately for Tunsil, things turned out well; he has since become a four-time Pro Bowler, accumulating $121 million in career earnings to date.

Despite his success, the memories from the 2016 draft still linger in his mind.

“To this day, I still carry that chip on my shoulder to prove everyone wrong. It revealed that I am human; I make mistakes, but that’s not who I am,” he shared with Bien-Aime. “This was just a chapter in my journey. Ultimately, I want that gold jacket and to be regarded as one of the best ever.”
